Guided By Voices - “Fictional Environment Dream”
It may shock you to learn that Guided By Voices is only releasing one record in 2024. After an unprecedented run that saw the indie legends release 11 albums in four years, Robert Pollard is pumping the breaks just a bit, as Strut of Kings (out June 28th) is the only new music GBV has on the horizon for the foreseeable future. Granted, there’s a chance the spry Pollard could return to his frenetic pace in 2025, but I’ve learned to cherish every release from these forefathers of indie rock. After the abrupt end to the formation of the classic lineup reunion in 2014, I didn’t except anything further. So, it’s been a treat to get an additional 17 records out of this songwriting genius. The third single from Strut of Kings, “Fictional Environment Dream,” is vintage Pollard, and another welcome addition to his ever-expanding catalog of beauties.
“Baba O’Reilly” was a staple of GBV live performances for years, representing Pollard’s deep and unyielding respect for the classic rock that he grew up on. The Who has always been a GBV influence, even if more tacitly at times, but it really comes out on “Fictional Environment Dream.” Pollard returns to his roots for one of the band’s more anthemic tunes in recent memory.
