Vanity Mirror - "Tuesday’s News"
For millennials like myself, the influence of the music of the 1960s, particularly the Lennon-McCartney school of songwriting, is welcome. After all, it’s the first music that many millennials and later Gen Xers were ever exposed to, so it’s continued prevalence amongst songwriters is in a way, comforting. The warm textures and baroque instrumentation reminds us of early experiences combing through our parents’ record collections.
Their melodic sensibilities and continue to find footing in the broader world of indie rock music, and it’s been that way for quite some time. From the Paisley Underground to the Elephant 6 Collective and beyond, their influence has endured and continues to stitch together broad swaths of the softer sounding rock universe. Los Angeles/Toronto duo Vanity Mirror are cut from that cloth, but their music is much more than nostalgic navel gazing. Their latest full length, Puff, is filled with songs that build off of the prime sonic tenants of this classic sound. Lead single “Tuesday’s News” is the probably the finest example of this. The track flows freely from some robust piano playing, a series of homely harmonies that make their mark throughout, and crystal-clear sounding guitar tones.
