Gnawing - “Clean Up Your Act”

Richmond, Virginia’s Gnawing play fucking loud. Hell, the lead single from their forthcoming second LP, Modern Survival Techniques, was called “Gimme Tinnitus.” They’re embracing ear ringing consequences of their maximum decibel rock and roll.

“Clean Up Your Act,” the second single from Modern Survival Techniques is, you guessed it, loud. But the great thing about Gnawing is their heaviness doesn’t belie songcraft. The band makes effective use of quiet-loud dynamics to draw listeners in and they’re masterful at pairing hooks with grunge guitar-fuzz, specifically in the song’s infectious chorus. There’s no shortage of guitar licks, either, making “Clean Up Your Act” a true classic in the 1990’s alternative mold.
