Looms - "Hologram"
Brooklyn’s Looms returned earlier this month with the release of their first new music in two years, a fresh-sounding EP called The Dogs of Doubt. Produced by frontman Sharif Mekawy, the EP sees the long-running project heading in a bit of a different direction, with softer tones and mellower vibes. It’s a contrast to the rousing, full-throated sound of their 2019 LP, The Way Up, but the results are just as palatable. The stand-out example of this metamorphosis is the EP’s single, “Hologram,” which goes down smoothly thanks to a combination of delicate instrumentation and tender vocals.
“Hologram” is centered on escapism, self-doubt, and ambivalence, as Mekawy sings of second-guessing feelings and searching for relief from isolation. Mekawy’s voice is supple and feather-like, especially when layered in unison with Mary Hood. The backdrop is sparse for the majority of the track’s runtime, serving to lift the prominence of their fantastic interwoven vocal performance, but the tempo, rhythm section, and guitar work picks up just after the midpoint for a stirring ending.
