Teal Pop - "Sugar Stingray"

Teal Pop - "Sugar Stingray"

After listening to Teal Pop’s debut self-titled full-length from cover to cover, I walked away feeling like the moniker pretty accurately represented the music. The greenish blue of the color teal looks and feels relaxing, and the duo of Marina Aguerre and Lionel “Vinyl” Williams perfectly captured the kind of soothing pop vibe that the color conveys. Across the record’s tens songs, the long-time collaborators create an ethereal, teal-hued alternate universe of beaches, ocean breezes, and tropicalia-themed tranquility.

“Sugar Stingray,” the ninth track on the record, is probably the best microcosm of the album’s overall theme. Sonically and lyrically, the song paints a portrait of a day in Surf City, with lyrics like “wordless speaking (speaking no words) like deep ocean diving (or float in the air)” conveyed through Aguerre’s sedative vocals, while a mellow guitar riff gently propels the song forward. The shuffling rhythm section pulls it all together, creating a halcyon soundscape.
