Slow Pulp - "Broadview"
Slow Pulp’s stock has steadily risen over the last few years, and for good reason. The childhood friends of Teddy Mathews, Alex Leeds, and Henry Stoehr released a series of stellar EPs in the latter half of the last decade, but their COVID recorded debut full-length, Moveys, represented a turning point for the Chicago-based outfit. Their songwriting reached new heights and was a record distinctly inspired by its time, reflecting on depression, fatigue, and isolation against a backdrop of downtuned, chugging guitars. Their second full-length, Yard, comes at a time of more optimism, as their still downtempo arrangements and gaze-y instrumentation are paired with a forward-facing resolve.
“Broadview,” the penultimate track on Yard, embodies this broad, future-facing outlook. Frontperson Emily Massey sings of practicing self-forgiveness, singing at multiple times “’I’m just gonna give it a try, And know that it’s enough,” acknowledging that despite mistakes, patience with oneself is a virtue. The message is nicely complemented by some of the record’s rootsier musical moments, as pedal steel, harmonica, and banjo all play a crucial role in crafting the soundscape on “Broadview.”
