Adrian Danon - "Knight of Swords"
Jersey City’s Adrian Danon has been kicking around the open mic scene in Hudson County for a few years now, slowly, but surely, building and refining the eight songs on his brand new debut album, Knight of Swords. In addition to the previously released singles “Romance Is Dead” and “… Ready To Fall,” the record contains several other memorable songs that showcase his knack for love-centric songwriting, including the title track, which explores the breakup side of romance. This standout album cut is this week’s Look At My Records! Song of the Week.
“Knight of Swords” percolates with tension that builds off a cascading, verb-soaked guitar riff and Danon’s own reflections on a failed relationship. His guitar playing has a real retro, desert-psych vibe to it and the howling background vocals definitely add to that ambiance. The instrumentation exudes a spirit of contemplation, but lyrically, Danon’s post-mortem on this faded romance is mostly matter of fact and accepting. He’s not crying over spilled milk, and instead, shares a more stoic assessment of the aftermath: “We watched as our ship sank down. No, we can't. No, we can't lie now,” further adding at the conclusion that maybe the connection was more surface-level than he originally thought: “Nights of passion. Flawless fashion. Ain't it all just cheap distractions?”
