Byrh - "Drummer Phone"

2021 was a great year for Byrh. The New Brunswick-based duo of Sam Hersey and Christian Joyner upped their activity in the final few months of the year, releasing two quality tunes titled “Tin Man” and “Ying Yang Girl.” They’re starting 2022 on the right foot with another great one called “Dummer Phone,” thus continuing their trend of releasing danceable and energetic punk tunes.

On their latest release, Hersey and Joyner utilize synths in a way that’s reminiscent of a rawer-sounding Dismemberment Plan, while their jittery guitars and off-kilter beats give definite nods to the art-pop of Drums and Wires-era XTC. They focus on how and when to blend their keys in with an eye towards making their melodies pop. On “Drummer Phone,” the synths hum along throughout, playing a big role in the chorus where they hit some screech-like heights - but the build-up to this peak is just as infectious. The verses swirl and swell with pointedly placed guitars, but they don’t abandon their synths. Instead, they re-up their intensity at just the right moments and let them stew when needed for added effect.
