Sea Lemon - "Fortune Teller"
I remember when I first heard “Adult Diversion,” the lead track off of Alvvays’ 2014 self-titled debut album. I was immediately pulled in by its dissonant opening riff, which crests into an extended jangle, crossing over into what I like to call a twin-guitar magic zone. Those sounds alone convey a kind of warm nostalgia and eliciting that type of emotion from guitar tones is not an easy task. However, I found myself feeling the same way when I first heard “Fortune Teller,” the latest single from Sea Lemon, though songwriter Natalie Lew uses different means to achieve a similar end. Her enamoring blend relies on both guitars and synths, which are subtle at first, but shimmer brightly as the song progresses, really hitting their stride in the choruses where Lew concedes that she’s not clairvoyant when it comes to relationships, singing “I’m not a fortune teller.” Towards the end, she pulls a pretty sick riff out of her back pocket, giving the song an extra punch, before one final, magical chorus.
