Royal Blush - “Roll The Dice”
Royal Blush introduced themselves to the world on Monday with the release of their debut single, “Roll The Dice.” The New Jersey based quintet, which is fronted by the talented Allison Heckert, traffics in dreams in more ways than one. Their sound definitely draws influence from some of the more ethereal sounding indie pop outfits of the late 1980s, like Cocteau Twins (though Heckert’s voice is much more direct and clear), The Sundays, Lush, and Mazzy Star, thanks largely in part to their vast sonic palette of dizzying, to-the-sky guitars and effervescent melodies. Royal Blush definitely displays a lot of strengths on their first ever release, but I particularly enjoy how Heckart’s vocals remain firmly entrenched. They never get out muscled in the mix.
In addition to their uber dreamy sound, the lyrical themes on “Roll The Dice” explore the desire to follow your hopes and dreams, even if that may be a scary prospect. Principal songwriter and lead guitarist Andrew Merclean recently shared the following on the song’s inspiration: “The lyrics speak to the thrill, danger, and vulnerability of betting on yourself. Do we live a safe life or do we roll the dice and gamble on something more fulfilling?”
