Veronica Everheart - "Antiquity"
Veronica Everheart is new to The Garden State by way of Arizona, but it seems as if she’s had no trouble acclimating to the thriving DIY scene here on the East Coast. The 20-year-old songwriter has already made some notable local appearances at the Red House in Boonton and at Crossroads in Garwood. Short clips of these gigs on social media captured glimpses of what seemed like some excellent, high-energy performances, so I have a feeling she’ll be gracing more stages in the New York City area very soon. My first exposure to Everheart was through a short, but effective Instagram ad for her last single, “Sour,” which perfectly highlighted the billowing guitars in the song’s chorus and her direct, sort of sardonic vocal delivery. It was an ad that I was happy to see for a change! Last week, Everheart dropped the follow up to “Sour,” a new tune called “Antiquity,” which is this week’s Look At My Records! Song of the Week.
“Antiquity” has a bit of a different flavor when compared with “Sour.” Everheart still maintains her poise and sounds quite confident as a songwriter, but there’s much more in the way of guitar atmospherics on this one. The more straight-forward approach on “Sour” is replaced by something a little more sonically abstract. The percussion is still sharp and Everheart’s vocals still come through quite clearly, but the guitars are decidedly dreamier and there’s a bit more reverb throughout, which helps to create a hazier sounding bedroom pop soundscape.
In a recent Instagram post, Everheart shared a bit about the song’s deeper meaning:
"antiquity" is about someone who was just there, like lukewarm coffee still in the pot, an unmade bed, the seat of the sofa sunken in. You are left feeling cold and disoriented, facing remnants of the recent past.
This state generates a feeling of helplessness. You were caught up in them always being there, adapting to some routine that now ceases. Independence is foreign, you can only revert back to forgotten, sometimes immature habits that were established the last time you were on your own.
I ask myself what that will be like now when it isn’t a breakup? When it isn’t toxic? This person is still here but just not close. I want his touch but can’t obtain it. The bed will always be left freshly slept in.
