Wetsuit - "Sticky Sweet"

Wetsuit - "Sticky Sweet"

Wetsuit is a brand new project out of Brooklyn fronted by songwriter Allison Becker. Like many creatives during the pandemic, Becker found herself with an abundance of free time while back in her hometown of St. Louis. So, she picked up a guitar and got to writing, crafting a series of songs for a then-unnamed project. Upon returning to Brooklyn, she recruited some familiar faces in guitarist Anders Nils, bassist Paul DeSilva, and drummer Zach Koenig, and Wetsuit was born. Their first single, “Sticky Sweet,” dropped last week.

“Sticky Sweet” has a very nice, twee-pop sound to it, complete with clean guitar strumming and a simple backbeat that allows Becker’s lovelorn lyrics to come through clearly. Like many of the songsmiths that fall within the aforementioned genre, Becker artfully describes the innocent feeling of new love, simultaneously incorporating some apt syrup analogies and a clever play on words that definitely applies to a majority of New York City stairwells: “Simple syrup. Sticky sweet. Watch your head. Those stairs are steep. I’m falling hard for you.” In a manner that’s reminiscent of The Vaselines or the Pastels, the guitars eventually surge in intensity, before receding into the background for the song’s final moments. “Sticky Sweet” wouldn’t sound out of place on the International Pop Underground Convention compilation or any other 20th century K Records collection, for that matter.

The band also shared a cool video for the track, which involves syrups and other sweet things. You can stream it below!

You can purchase “Sticky Sweet” via Bandcamp. The track is also available to stream on all platforms. Keep up with Wetsuit by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook.
