Day & Dream - “Separation Anxiety”
Asheville dream-pop duo Day & Dream are masters of the genre. Their songs are angelic and translucent sounding, effectively transporting listeners to an otherworldly spectrum of twinkling sonic textures. Their latest single, “Separation Anxiety,” succeeds in bottling up all of these elements into a sprawling four minutes and change. Inspired by keyboardist Abby Amaya’s therapy puppy Zeppi, the lyrics detail their relationship, and how the two mutually guide and support each other while exploring both the negative aspects of separation and the positive impact of their presence: “wherever you fall, I’m falling. Show me your light, I’ll shine.” With more of a scaled-back and lo-fi sound, the beat and basslines guide the song through some accentuated sound effects, like chirping birds, crashing waves, and of course, a barking dog. The guitars and overall vibe are a bit more subdued when compared with prior releases like “A Study In The Pixels of Your Face” and “Rabbit Hole,” but with that, “Separation Anxiety” showcases the duo’s ability to turn down the energy and be a bit more airy and light with truly excellent results.
