Phranque - "Love Bomb"
We’ve gotten pretty acquainted with Phranque Gallo over the last few years. Not only does he share my wonderful surname, but he’s also the mastermind behind one of the most unique sounding bands in the current New York City scene, a Ween and Primus influenced trio called Karabas Barabas. In addition to releasing several Steve Albini engineered records with that project, Phranque has also been releasing music under his given name, which has served as a steady outlet for his other creations. His latest release as Phranque, a song called “Love Bomb,” just dropped last week and if you’re familiar with Gallo’s work, it sounds very much like one of his creations, but with some new elements to digest and enjoy. The scorching track carries some of the key traits of his main project, like quirky, doom riffs, and boppy synth lines that are reminiscent of something you’d hear in an old horror flick. These same elements, combined with Gallo’s melodic vocals, help give this track a bit more of a garage rock vibe, reminding me very much of The Gories or The Mummies.
