Whiner - "Dog"
New York City goth-rock standouts Whiner are back with their first new music of the new year, a brooding synth-fueled banger called “Dog.” Building off of the chilling nature of their October single “Fear,” the band turns down the tempo a bit on their latest effort, and by doing so, creates a colder and moodier atmosphere that manages to sound just as anthemic.
“Dog” opens with an eerie, but palpable synth riff that sets the song’s icy tone. The rhythm section feels discordant, combining a thudding bass line and a beat that’s centered on a hard snare drum with perfectly timed cymbal flashes that ripple through the track’s dark atmosphere. These stirring sonics move in lockstep with the lyrics, which examine the complex nature of nostalgia. Frontman Cam Castan’s words perfectly capture those short bouts of melancholy that sometimes work their way into our everyday lives after a triggering moment induces a particularly sad or painful memory. The chorus particularly resonates in its examination of the dynamics of these once dormant memories, as he sings “And you’re never too far / You took it too far / You should have left it alone / Like a sleeping dog.”
“Dog” will appear on the band’s forthcoming second full length, Peace Out Cruel World, which is set for release later this year. Stream the track below and add it to your playlists on your platform of choice. Keep up with Whiner by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook.
