Kalbells - “Purplepink”
Every time I play Kalbells on Local Fidelity, I remind listeners that the band is a favorite in my household. Their dazzling first album, Ten Flowers, stayed in regular rotation on our turntable for quite some time, and the EP they dropped last year, Mothertime, didn’t leave the cassette deck for a hot minute. So, needless to say, everyone around these parts is pretty excited for the release of their sophomore full-length, Max Heart, in mid-March. The lead single from the record, “Purplepink,” dropped last week and it’s a funky first taste of what the band has in store for their next effort.
I’m not sure if “purple” being in the title triggered something in my subconscious, but I immediately felt a whole lotta Prince vibes after only hearing the first few seconds of “Purplepink.” The song opens with some slinking synths that move in lockstep with its sultry rhythm, slowly building up to a dynamite guitar solo about three-quarters of the way through. Through the track’s luminous groove and soulful vocals, the quartet creates a kind of a futuristic-sounding cross between disco, funk, and electro-pop on “Purplepink” that’s absolutely delectable. I actually think I can borrow a few lyrics from the song to help describe my feelings towards it: “A floating slice of angel cake is one way I’d describe [Purplepink].”
The band also shared an awesome video for the track, which you can stream below.
