Speed The Plough - "Beautiful Place"

Speed The Plough - "Beautiful Place"

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of The Feelies and the many associated projects in their orbit.  Speed The Plough is probably the most eclectic sounding band in their universe, as many of their songs incorporate spirited chamber-pop elements that bolster their classic indie rock sound. The band has gone through its share of lineup changes and hiatuses since their formation in the mid-1980s, and before their first prolonged break, the band entered Mix-o-lydian Studios in 1995 to record a fan favorite, “Beautiful Place.” The band recently uncovered this long lost recording of the track and shared it on Bandcamp earlier this month.

This version of “Beautiful Place” is more of a straight-up indie-rock number when compared with some of their more atmospheric arrangements, but it’s moody and reflective in a way that explores the impact of sudden loss and how it shapes our memory. The slow-burning track features some warm guitar tones, gorgeous harmonies, and light flickers of bells and keys that carry it through to a rippin’ guitar solo at the end.

“Beautiful Place” is the most recent installment in a monthly single series that features both recordings from the band’s archives and new material.  Stream the track below and purchase it via Bandcamp! Keep up with the band by liking them on Facebook and following them on Instagram.
