Rachel Angel - "Highway Songs"
Rachel Angel fled Brooklyn for Miami in 2018, but she held onto the twangy and rugged alt-country charm that she developed in this urban jungle. Her latest single, “Highway Songs,” sees her sharpening her wits and further expanding her horizons as a songwriter with some earnest storytelling and a robust country-folk sound.
“Highway Songs” sounds as if it was plucked right off of a barren, winding desert road. Angel perfectly sets that mood of high noon, back road desolation with lyrics that describe her own literal journey on the road as a musician, and through life, as she confronts health challenges and embattled relationships that sent her to “the brink.” However, Angel embraces the challenges of a road-tested renegade on “Highway Songs,” moving forward with strength from her experiences. The well-crafted instrumentation really stands out, as Angel perfectly pairs an infectious, meandering riff with the wail of pedal steel and anchors it with the patient strum of an acoustic guitar. It’s the perfect recipe for a song to soundtrack an afternoon ride in your car with the windows way down.
“Highway Songs” is the title track from Angel’s forthcoming EP. You can pre-order it on compact disc via Bandcamp. The song is also available on all streaming platforms, including Spotify.
