Silverware - “One True Light”

San Francisco songwriter Ainsley Wagoner wields a powerful and commanding voice. It’s the defining characteristic of her work under the moniker Silverware. On her 2021 debut LP, No Plans, she utilized it in captivating ways. Whether it was the warm centerpiece on tracks like “31,” or playing more of a complementary role on more experimental compositions like “Important,” her voice always serves a critical purpose in service of the song. Her style, structure, and approach continue to evolve on her most recent releases, which include the soothing “New Bright Room” and the effervescent “No Expectations.” Wagoner’s direction forward on these new songs sees her venturing into once uncharted territories, as she experiments with new genres, including synth-pop and jazz, in creating vibrant arrangements that showcase her striking vocal performances.

Silverware’s latest offering is the title track from her forthcoming second album, One True Light, which we’re excited to premiere today. The sonically adventurous track moves in waves, starting soft and sparse before taking off with a burst of rhythmic energy. It continues to oscillate between several distinct, but harmonious elements, including lusher piano and percussion-linked portions, more pare-backed vocal-centered snippets, a woodwind-driven bridge, and a mammoth guitar riff-laden outro. Lyrically, the track’s titular phrase represents its themes of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity, with Wagoner’s trenchant phrasing resonating throughout.
