Gary’s Dream - “Edges”

Gary’s Dream - “Edges”

Gary’s Dream hails from the Catskills region of New York State and their name is pretty reflective of their music. Their songs are dreamy and gentle, but they inject just the right amount of fuzz to keep you on your toes. The three songs on their debut EP, Gary’s First Dream, were gorgeous and velvety with precisely placed guitar-driven peaks, making each feel like a swirling fever dream. Today, the quartet is back with a brand new song called “Edges,” which builds off of the stylistic foundation they established on their first release.

While the songs on their debut EP have a decidedly lo-fidelity bent, “Edges” sounds and feels a bit more polished without sacrificing any character. Crisp, angelic-sounding vocals, dynamic twin guitar interplay, and a steady snare-driven beat coalesce to create a well-layered wall of sound. The atmosphere is tender initially, starting with isolated vocals, before guitars shuffle in, swelling and glowing as the song moves forward, climaxing with a towering, fuzz-infused guitar solo. Lyrically, the track offers a glimpse into the past, as it recounts founding member Vive Tilson’s first experience navigating through the challenges of finding true love. Expounding on the song’s deeper meaning, the band shared that “Edges” explores the “cathartic reclaiming of individuality and power after the beautiful but sad re-awakening that can happen when we lose ourselves deeply in the codependent haze of young love only to exit the fog and find yourself as one person again.” The song, which was written more than a decade ago, was buried deep within Tilson’s archives as a solo recording until last year when it was reworked as a full band effort.
