Endearments - "Hazy Eyes"

Brooklyn’s Endearments are purveyors of a distinct kind of love-centric, sparkly dream pop. Their catalog is rife with songs that peel back the curtain on the struggles of tumultuous relationships, particularly, how they can tragically and painfully unravel. But on the project’s newest single, “Hazy Eyes,” frontman and principal songwriting Kevin Marksson flips the script on this running theme. Rather than the winding down process, this track explores the joyous beginnings: the feelings, the sights, and the sounds.

As a modern love song of sorts, “Hazy Eyes” is an ode to a budding warm-weather relationship in the COVID era. The song recounts an MDMA-infused 4th of July evening spent on a Brooklyn rooftop, where Marksson and his girlfriend took in the holiday festivities. The instrumentation on “Hazy Eyes” recreates the setting, as the combination of Marksson’s heartbeat-like bass thump, Anjali Nair’s sparkling guitar playing, and Will Haywood Smith’s euphoric drumming mimic the adrenaline ebbs and flows of the moment. Marksson’s words perfectly expound the moment, opening with “hazy eyes, I want to talk to you all night,” before diving deeper (literally and figuratively): “when we feel like we’re water… And it feels like I’m falling.”

The band also shared a video to go along with the track, which you can watch below.

Pre-save “Hazy Eyes” now before it hits streaming platforms tomorrow. The song will appear on the band’s forthcoming EP, It Can Be Like This, which is out in November.
