Miracle Sweepstakes - “Rectangular Eclipse”
Brooklyn’s Miracle Sweepstakes are one of the city’s most exciting bands. Their rare blend of stellar songwriting, unbridled creativity, and top-notch musicianship has helped the quartet produce some outstanding and varied-sounding records over the last half dozen years. The frantic experimentation on their 2016 debut, Turn Heel, gave way to the luscious psych pop heard on their stunning 2019 sophomore full-length, Rorshached, a record so good that I still find myself regularly listening to it four years later. Their next chapter begins with the forthcoming release of their third album, Last Licks, which is shaping up to be another distinct entry in their catalog. We’re excited to premiere the second single from the record, “Rectangular Eclipse.”
“Rectangular Eclipse” is a departure from the baroque pop songs on Rorshached, but like the path from record one to record two, it’s more evolutionary than anything else. Psychedelic is still a proper adjective to describe its sound, but this track is markedly trippier - making it sound something more akin to a stuporous LSD trip than a bright rollick through the midday sun. The foursome is as tight as ever musically, with the twin guitar attack of frontman/guitarist Craig Heed and guitarist Justin Mayfield giving listeners plenty of nuggets to indulge in.
The band also shared a video for the track, which captures bits and pieces of various bright, amusement park rides. You can watch it below.
Last Licks is set for release on October 27th via One Weird Trick. You can preorder the record via Bandcamp. Keep up with the band by following them on Instagram.
Miracle Sweepstakes will be celebrating the release of Last Licks with a special release show on November 4th at Unruly Collective. They’ll be joined by Street Missile, Pleaser, and Jeremy Good Job.
