The Planes - “Feels Like Years”

The Planes - “Feels Like Years”

The Planes have been a staple of the Brooklyn music scene for over a decade, and with that kind of longevity comes a lot of music. They’re about to release their sixth full-length, Dark Matter Recycling Co., on September 15th via Totally Real Records, and have already shared two great singles in the lead-up, the free-flowing “Thrift Store” and the jubilantly fuzzy “First Breath After Mask.” Today, the band shared the final single, a wistful, 90s-inspired rocker called “Feels Like Years.”

Frontman Stephen Perry waxes nostalgic on “Feels Like Years,” doing some deep soul searching of people, places, and things from past lives while creating a sonic backdrop steeped in classic indie rock sounds. The song’s mix of jangle, fuzz, and big licks is reminiscent of Where You Been-era Dinosaur Jr. and Buffalo Tom, with perfectly executed loud-quiet dynamics and killer chorus. The song ends with a mammoth, rapid-fire riff that’ll leave you wanting more.

Perry shared the following about the song’s inspiration:

It's a song about going back to your hometown as a mature adult, dealing with the baggage you have, realizing that people are gone who will never be back, and ultimately, it's about willing to forgive past grudges (or at least move on from them). It ought to mean something a little different to everyone, and I'm not entirely sure what it means to me. We all have old conflicts, we've all lost people, we probably all have something we'd like to be forgiven for too. We sometimes hold keys to a lot of places we'll never go again, and it's ok to give them back.
