Dead Leaf Echo - “Shadowlight”
Dead Leaf Echo made their triumphant return in 2022. Like many, the unfortunate events of the pandemic had the effect of postponing band-related activity, but last year, the Brooklyn-based trio re-emerged better than ever with one of their finest releases to date, a swirling, shoegaze-influenced track called “Boo.” It was the first sampling of their forthcoming EP of the same name, which is set for release next Friday, April 28th via Papercup Music.
Before that, the band is sharing one final single from the EP called “Shadowlight,” which we’re excited to premiere today on Look At My Records! Dead Leaf Echo’s sound draws inspiration from the legendary Creation Records and 4AD bands of the late 80s and early 90s, but the trio gives their music a decidedly modern focus. Dripping with reverb and shrouded in dark hues, “Shadowlight” directly confronts issues of police brutality and racial inequality in a profound way. Against eerie sonic scenery that features a driving rhythm section, billowing guitars, and a fervent energy, Dead Leaf Echo peppers the song with lyrics that candidly reference the police killing of George Floyd, including the refrain of “I can’t breathe” in the verses.
