Dayton Swim Club - "Rage All Night"

Dayton Swim Club - "Rage All Night"

We were thrilled to share Dayton Swim Club’s compelling video for their track “Predatory Drift” last year. It was a unique piece, both in its saturated aura of eeriness and high cinematic quality, which came complete with an ambiguous, fear-inducing narrative.

Today, the Los Angeles band are back with another piece of noir cinema, but this time, it artfully captures the band in the live setting. This video is not your standard live cut, though, and instead aims to replicate the experience of being right there in the audience bearing witness to their dramatic, slow burning brand of California post-punk.

“Rage All Night” is the perfect embodiment of the quartet’s brooding sound and demonstrates how they’re able to breathe additional life into their music through their live performances. Flessa’s howling croon resonates even more from the vantage point of a foggy stage, and the dynamic vocal interplay between him and Dominique Matelson definitely invokes the chemistry shared by John Doe and Exene Cervenka of Los Angeles cowpunk legends X. Drummer Jessica Perelman anchors the track from behind the kit, shining at key moments and helping to boost the energy levels when necessary.

Weston Lyon, who directed the video, shared the following about its inspiration:

I showed up to this Dayton Swim Club performance in Eagle Rock with three cameras looking to intrude on the separation between talent and attendee. The hope was to film a portrait of a working band, capture the office, and flat-out occupy that area of your head where the wavering intonation of rock music totally comes together yet bursts into fugitive sound all the same. Swaying below nightclub glimmer and chalky fog, the members of DSC played a horny set to a scene that was doing absolutely nothing the winter before. These films look to capture that and possibly the sweeter side of their act.

Stream the video below.

”Rage All Night” appears on Dayton Swim Club’s latest rehearse Hangman, which is out now via Perpetual Doom. You can purchase it on limited edition cassette via Bandcamp. The album is also available to stream on Spotify. Keep up with the band by following them on Instagram.
