Jewelry - "Oh Ya I”

If you frequent this site, you know we love Brooklyn’s current reigning king of lo-fi bangers, Ryan Laetari. He’s dropped a bunch of awesome songs under his new moniker Jewelry over the last few months, including “Go Back,” which was our Song of the Week in mid-December. So, we’re thrilled today to share his latest tune, “Oh Ya I”

The ever prolific Laetari knows how to find that perfect, high-pitched guitar tone and mix it with a soothing electro-beat in a way that’s guaranteed to trigger waves of nostalgia. There’s a bit of soft melancholy on “Oh Ya I,” as he fuses a spinning lead riff with an undercurrent of breezy rhythm guitar strums, while also working in some swooning harmonies in both the verses and choruses. In particular, the harmonious refrain of “Oh Ya I” that kicks off the chorus is irresistibly catchy, as it mimics the melody of the same three-syllable phrase in The Beatles’ classic “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” And of course, any Fab Four callback definitely adds an extra layer of sentimentality to a song that’s already teeming with it.
