Sun Kin - "Trying To Trust"

Sun Kin, the moniker of Los Angeles based artist Kabir Kumar, draws from a vast sonic palette on their brand new single, “Trying To Trust.” They display a clear affinity for the colorful, driving beats of house music, the vibrant textures of disco, and the deep, soulful nature of R&B. These distinct influences meet at an intersection and proceed to run parallel with the song’s thematic focus. Specifically, its rich, ecclectic sonics are matched by Sun Kin’s words, which burst with life and discovery, as they sing about processing never before experienced emotions and being more romantically adventurous.

Via e-mail, they described the themes of self-discovery and growth that “Trying To Trust” explores:

"Trying to Trust" was written when I was discovering casual dating for the first time, after a string of monogamous relationships. I come from an Indian immigrant family which is not capital-C Conservative, but certainly not that open about casual sex. This song attempts to illustrate how difficult it can be to allow yourself to feel vulnerable and lean into that loss of control later in life -- you have to unlearn a lot of protective measures. It's influenced by a lot of 80s and 90s house music, when the genre was starting to break into the mainstream and onto the charts. I feel like dance music from this era also emits this sense of freedom, mixed with the fear that comes from detaching yourself from norms you might have been taught but don't really reflect who you are.
