Young Winona - "LA Waste"
“LA Waste,” the new single from Los Angeles trio Young Winona, sounds like the sonic equivalent of walking down Sunset Boulevard during the dog days of summer. It’s heavy and hazy, reflecting the harsh malaise of the city’s overbearing heat and smog, and the song’s washed-out melody, which progresses from a subdued growl to an unrestrained roar, captures the feelings of hope that can quickly morph into frustration for many of its inhabitants. It’s a feeling that’s also present in their words. Through the track, Young Winona attempts to slowly peel back the glitzy veneer of their city of residence, noting that many come there trying to live a glamorized life, but that the monotony and repetitive nature of the rat race can be emotionally draining, a sentiment that they perfectly embody with a killer lyric: “I think to myself with the sun in the sky. This is as good a place as any to live until you die.” The guitars definitely get a bit sludgy at times, making “LA Waste” sound just like Dirty-era Sonic Youth, which if you remember, has a few tracks of its own that confront the harsher realities of life in the City of Angels.
