Jane Doe Ensemble - "Pink Liquor" b/w "Respect"
The experimental stylings of New York’s Jane Doe Ensemble strike a chord with their ability to venture out and create interesting, avant-garde sounding music that still retains a strong sense of pleasing melodicism. On their latest 7-inch single, “Pink Liquor” b/w “Respect,” the ensemble pieces together sounds that are abstract and unpredictable, but simultaneously remain inviting through their bright sonic layers of keys, strings, and wistful vocals. The A-side, “Pink Liquor,” incorporates the thudding, cacophonous sounds of Confusion Is Sex era Sonic Youth and pits them against some haunting harmonies and an intense concluding guitar breakdown. “Respect” is a bit of a change of pace. Here, Wren Krisztin’s vocal melodies serve as a counterpoint to more discordant sounding keys and percussion that wavers between steady and scattered. The beat eventually comes to a grinding halt, before quickly accelerating again with a barrage of slinking keys and propulsive drumming.
