Toy Sandwich - "Cool Dome"
“Cool Dome” is the lead single from Toy Sandwich’s new album Your New Comrade, a record that’s both wryly comedic and musically inviting for fans of the quirky and abstract sounds of pre-1990 They Might Be Giants. The solo project of Doug Bleek (Miracle Sweepstakes, Harvey Eyeballs) sees the Brooklyn songwriter exploring some of these idiosyncratic indie rock influences and blending them with the kind of tongue-in-cheek lyrics that are definitely smirk inducing. “Cool Dome” is a shining example of how he nicely ties them together. The track features some bouncy organ sounding synths that help add a bit of a floaty Flying Nun vibe and off-kilter lyrics that border on surreal. Through the lyrics, Bleek gives life to a conflicted protagonist as they fight the urge to purchase an ornate dome. He mixes in the kind of overwhelming feelings that many can relate to when you really want to impulse buy something expensive and awesome with lyrics like: “Famous architects designed it / With the help of otherworldly beings / That’s what you’re seeing / You obviously can’t afford this dome.”
“Cool Dome” appears on Toy Sandwich’s new album Your New Comrade, which is available on limited edition compact disc via Bandcamp. You can also stream the album on Spotify. Keep up with Toy Sandwich by following them on Instagram.
