Extra Special - "True Fear"
Chances are you’ve had a panic attack in 2020. Whether it’s the seemingly never-ending global pandemic or the rapid destruction of democratic norms in our country, the world has certainly provided a lot of source material to cycle in and out of your racing thoughts. But there’s a particular kind of high anxiety that sets in when you mix weed with the current apocalyptic like circumstances that we’re living through today. Extra Special, the new project of Brooklyn’s Amelia Bushell (Grim Streaker, Belle Mare), analyzes this type of substance-induced panic on their debut single, “True Fear,” and canonizes the people that help ease you through these periods of personal unrest. The song is a sweet ode to that special friend who sits by your side and comforts you during these intense moments. Sonically, the track features several waves of rich-sounding synths and hypnotic beats that mirror the journey from unrelenting panic to the soothing relief that eventually sets in.
Extra Special also shared an accompanying video that chronicles the above-described situation from start to finish. Via e-mail, Bushell described the inspiration behind the track and the video:
You ever get a weeeee bit too high and fully believe you are on your death bed and have to be calmed down by a friend who is also very high but somehow is able to ignore that and be there for you? This song is for those champions. It’s for the friends that still remain your friends even after you have a complete meltdown in the middle of Ikea, a hissy fit when you find out there are olives on the pizza you ordered, an outburst when your roommate eats all your almond butter, or a tantrum in the car when your crush starts dating some other hot bitch.
