Sweetbreads - "Wanderer"
Brooklyn’s Sweetbreads are here to inject a little bit of warm, country western flair into the cold, grey winter that we’re currently experiencing in the northeast. Their new single, “Wanderer,” sounds like it was plucked right off of an old dusty cacti-lined trail, mixed with a bit of whiskey, and then funneled through headphone wires. Frontperson and principal songwriter Melody Stropp sings with a dramatic Nancy Sinatra-like bravado on “Wanderer,” and her words are pure country-folk poetry. With just a bit of twang and a lot of gusto, she yearningly pines for the return of a loved one, as her voice rings out like a ghost in the night in the chorus: “You'll hear this song a-hummin' / As it dances on the wind / And come back to my arms once again.” Stropp’s tone is soulful and rich, adding a bit of a confident, outlaw country vibe to a track that’s lyrics kinda read like a love song. The interaction between her singing and the wailing guitars further bolsters this atmosphere, as the song builds up to a robust conclusion of flourishing guitar riffs and propulsive drumming.
