HALAN - "A Waste"
Los Angeles-based alt-pop artist HALAN takes a dark turn on her newest single, “A Waste.” Though the songs on her stunning debut EP, Best Intentions, had an air of gloom to them, her latest track adds even more somber sounding synth textures and pairs them with lyrics that capture a bit of a despondent existential crisis.
Like her previous releases, “A Waste” is a slick sounding, well-produced effort that benefits greatly from a fine attention to detail, as the sonic atmosphere that HALAN creates encapsulates the feelings of loneliness and despair that she describes in the lyrics. Her words closely mirror the beat, which sets the song’s solemn tone as it trudges along. For instance, the opening lyrics, which focus on dejectedly stewing about inside your own head, are followed by a low, hollow-sounding beat that almost sounds like it’s bouncing off the walls of an empty room. It’s a very captivating approach that seems to emulate the real-life experience of feeling alone and absolutely dejected. The dense synths continue to expand into the choruses, which close the song with a powerful refrain that builds in intensity with each utterance:
Nothing's fair to anyone
What you planned can come undone
What you spend can be a waste. Where you reach can be outrun.
