Deanna Faye - "Reassure”
“Reassure,” the new single from Toronto indie-folk artist Deanna Faye, dropped yesterday and it’s a strong follow up to her excellent debut track from this past summer, “Electric Blue.” The silky and spirited song mixes narrative folk-inspired lyrics with a moody indie-pop atmosphere, as Faye intimately expounds on the dynamics of a changing relationship.
Listeners are likely to be transfixed by Faye’s unique and expressive voice. On “Reassure,” she sings with precise diction and enunciation, allowing certain syllables to roll off her tongue so that her words softly float before they settle in for a feather-light landing. Her tender voice dances around some shy guitars that swell a little at times and a sparse beat that steadily anchors the song through its verses and slightly more booming choruses. Faye’s emotive vocal delivery acutely conveys the story in the lyrics, which documents the evolution of her feelings in relation to a loved one as they shift from patient infatuation to disillusioned detachment. Notably, Faye marks this change of heart with a lyrical twist, as she goes from singing “It’s okay if you must keep your hands to yourself, I won’t mind” to flipping the script with the final line: “Is it ok if I keep my hands to myself?.. Will you mind at all?”
