Charlie Havenick - "Dichotomy"
The guitars that open up “Dichotomy,” the latest single from Los Angeles’ Charlie Havenick, hit me right in that power-pop sweet spot. There’s a slick little riff that floats in between some open, clean guitar strums, reminding me of a more concise version of the initial moments of The Lemonheads’ “It’s A Shame About Ray.” That comparison holds water as the song progresses, as Havenick exhibits her sharp songwriting skills, working in an exuberant and catchy chorus, and a sparkling jangle that flows from her melodies in the verses. The song is not without a bit of shredding, though, as she busts out a quick little kick right around the three-minute mark. It’s a short, but undeniable ripper. Havenick really showcases her versatility and stylistic range on “Dichotomy,” as compared with her first single, “Easy, Fire,” this tune sounds and feels a bit different, but similarly builds its foundation off of her solid talents as a multi-instrumentalist.
Oh, and one final thought: as a millennial, Havenick is my favorite Gen Zer. She makes funny as hell Instagram content, so follow her there. I’m 33, which is too old to start using Tiktok, so follow her there, too, if she has one (CAN’T CONFIRM).
