Worthitpurchase - "Gladly Fading"
A new young California band called Worthitpurchase released their debut album, Dizzy Age, last month, and it quickly became one of my favorite records of the year. The duo, which is made up of kindred musical spirits Omar Akrouche and Nicole Rowe, managed to create a unique and dazzling sonic experience by blending the lush and echoey elements of dream pop with the classically spacious and calming indie rock sound of genre luminaries like Yo La Tengo. Recorded entirely to tape at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone Studio, a big part of the record’s charm is the warmth created through the medium and the subtle quirks and flurries it generates. The songs are soft and palatable in a way that feels cinematic and dreamy with a fine attention to detail that bolsters the listening experience.
One of the standout tracks on the record is “Gladly Fading,” as it highlights the duo's propensity for layering textured guitar tones and complementing them with lyrics that nostalgically yearn for a simpler past. Last week, the band shared a video for the song that perfectly captures its sonic aura. Shot entirely on 16mm film, the video has a nostalgic sheer, as it quickly cycles between scenes of the inside of an old house, close up shots of Akrouche and Rowe, and a laptop with a Zoom call on the screen. The video then transitions to outdoor shots of crowded city streets and highways. The camera’s primary point of view moves at an accelerated pace that perfectly matches the fervor of the lyrics, which grapple with the aftermath of an emotional romantic split.
