Ok Cowgirl - "Get Gone"
Ok Cowgirl, the new project of Leah Lavigne (Fair Visions, Ryan Egan), represents a cross-section of several styles, tones, and emotions. The project’s first single, “Get Gone,” is certainly flush with dreamy guitars and floaty synths, but there are precisely placed jolts of energy that snap it out of this reverb-driven lull. It’s the lyrical subject matter and Lavigne’s dynamite delivery that really sets the song ablaze, as “Get Gone” packs several punches in its fierce critique of societal standards. These grievances are amplified by Lavigne’s powerful and domineering vocals, which step forward immediately. In the first minute, Lavigne’s voice commands attention with an almost Liz Fraser-like quality to it, stirring up indecipherable “ohs” and “ahs” before stepping back briefly and belting out her frustrations with toxic superficiality, beauty standards, and capitalism shortly thereafter. The song then descends into a punchy, fuzz-laden abyss that feels like the sonic equivalent of finally being able to release those feelings of frustration that you’ve kept locked inside your head for far too long.
