Slack Times - “Gone Things”
Slack Times are one of the current standout purveyors of jangle pop in the current indie pop scene. Hailing from the deep south of Birmingham, Alabama, the trio re-emerged this year with a re-tooled lineup and a crop of great new tunes in the form of an EP titled Gone Things. The four song collection builds off an already impression catalog of jangle pop gems.
The title track, “Gone Things,” encapsulates the mood of the entire record — it's soft and reflective, yet it carries an undeniable weight. Opening with delicate and jangly guitar arpeggios, vocalist Stuart gently sings through a haze, his voice sounding like it’s a bit off in the distance, as the track moves at a deliberate pace. The sonic backdrop reflects the deeper meaning in the lyrics, which, grapple with the concept of fleeting moments and the emotional weight of things left behind. Lines like “We were once the sun / Now we’re shadows on the wall” capture the essence of nostalgia and change — the recognition that something precious has slipped away, even as time moves on. There’s an understated sorrow in these words, yet an acknowledgment that life, of course, goes on.
