Peel Dream Magazine - “Machine Repeating”
Joseph Stevens, the songwriter behind Peel Dream Magazine, once appeared on an early iteration of the Look At My Records! radio program. That was way back in 2018, and in this ephemeral world, it’s nice to see that the project is still going strong, blossoming and evolving with each album cycle. Their 2022 album Pad represented a shift from a more shoegaze-centered sonic palette to something more kaleidoscopic, droning, and varied along the lines of Stereolab or Broadcast. They’ve continued on that path with their recent string of singles, culminating in the release of their fourth full-length, Rose Main Reading Room. Buried deep within the album’s track list is a shiny, aural gem called “Machine Repeating” that encapsulates their current sonic trajectory.
“Machine Repeating” is a swirling, hypnotic piece of work that encapsulates everything the band does well—layered guitars, soft, dreamy vocals, and a recurring, almost meditative lyrical refrain that loops in and out, imbuing the song with a sense of cyclical movement. It’s a captivating moment that lingers long after the song fades out.
