Wifey - “Mary Ann Leaves The Band”
Brooklyn’s Wifey are a relatively new, young band that knows what they’re doing. They’ve bucked the learning curve in every imaginable way. If you’ve seen them out gigging, then you’re definitely familiar with their tight, high-energy performances. So, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that their first recorded offering is pretty damn good.
“Maryann Leaves The Band” boasts a bevy of earworm-y hooks. From the sing-a-long inducing chorus to the playful lyrics that tell the story of marching band dropout Maryann, the track has all the makings of a power pop classic. The production is crisp and clean. The band also litters the track with lots of other addictive nuggets, including a massive guitar lick in the bridge that leads into a soliloquy from frontman Teddy Grey. Here, he shines more light on Mary Ann’s specific situation, noting that the object of her affection is in his early 30s and her breath control leaves much to be desired. The punchy drum fill in the song’s waning seconds is also a definite highlight.
