Allah-La’s - “Dust”
The current kings of American psychedelia, the Allah- La’s, have been on a roll for the last decade. Starting with the release of their debut self-titled full-length in 2012, the Los Angeles quartet has steadily developed a signature sound rooted in breezy seaside rhythms and the jangly guitar work of their Laurel Canyon forefathers. But with the release of their latest full-length, Zuma 85, the band is changing their stripes just a bit by dipping their toes into an artier kind of rock and roll. They’re branching out into a darker, decidedly more experimental realm. It’s one that can be traced back to Eno and Cale, rather than Young and Crosby.
The final single from Zuma 85, a hypnotic track called “Dust,” leans into more of a gloomier drone. Resting on a heady groove and an intoxicating guitar loop, the supple vocals of guitarist Miles Michaud steer the band into a dense and delightful sonic fog. It’s not as sunny as what we’ve come to expect from the California quarter, but it’s just as life affirming.
