Jeanines - "Each Day"
The 7-inch single has largely gone extinct in recent years. Given the high cost associated with manufacturing vinyl records, most independent imprints get more bang for their buck by pressing 12-inch records with as much music as they can cram on both sides. That wasn’t always the case, though. The 7-inch single was quite prevalent as recently as a decade ago. If you peruse Discogs, you’ll see that many of the ‘it’ indie rock bands of the late aughts and early 2010s released non-album singles with some of their most memorable tracks. As an example, give “Moped Girls” by Vivian Girls and “Sun Was High, So Was I” by Best Coast a quick listen.
Slumberland Records is one label that, thankfully, hasn’t stopped releasing great non-album 7-inch singles. As the Bay Area imprint settles into its fourth decade of operation, they continue to churn out great indie pop on bite-sized wax. Most recently, they released Each Day by the New York City-based Jeanines. The 7-inch single includes three short, but mighty pop-centric tunes and leads off with the stunning “Each Day.” On this one-minute and forty-two-second delight, the newly expanded trio saunters through a moody atmosphere of jangly guitars and sharp drumming, while frontperson Alicia Jeanine pointedly laments a failed relationship.
