The Telephone Numbers - “Weird Sisters”
San Francisco’s The Telephone Numbers are part of a burgeoning indie pop scene in the Bay Area. Their peers, which include the prolific Red, Pinks, & Purples, revel in blissful, treble-heavy indie pop ditties. The Telephone Numbers do, too, and they showed that they can hold their own on their magnificent 2021 debut full-length, The Ballad of Doug. Spain’s Meritorio Records put it out, and we keep tipping our hat to them for consistently finding indie pop diamonds in the rough.
Their latest release is a 7-inch single with a rollicking and dense A-side called “Weird Sisters.” On this wispy track, the band nicely contrasts the ramshackle jangle of their guitars with some darker, narrative-driven lyrics. Frontperson Thomas Rubenstein ruminates on a wandering soul trying to fight its way out of an unfamiliar world.
