Nicole Yun - "Lost Keys"
Nicole Yun has fronted Eternal Summers, one of indie rock’s very best trios, for over a decade. Starting with the release of their first record, Silver, in 2010, the project began an upward trajectory, with each subsequent release sounding better than the last. So, when Yun began work on her debut solo record in the late 2010s, she was already in rare songwriting form. The resulting eight songs on 2019’s Paper Suit represented some of her finest work, capturing a seasoned songwriter in touch with her influences, yet poised and determined to set sail on her own sonic course. Songs like “And After All,” “Tommie,” and “Supernatural Babe” were dreamy, punchy, and catchy, and most importantly, benefited from Yun’s unique, confessional storytelling ability.
Earlier this week Yun announced the forthcoming release of her sophomore effort, Matter, and with it, shared the album’s captivating lead single, “Lost Keys.” It’s an uptempo, guitar-driven track that takes aim at the negative fruits of capitalism: materialism, image, and waste, with some sharp quips at those “sipping wine in Machu Pichu” and “haters, jealous neighbors.” The song appears to scratch the surface of what’s shaping up to be an intensely personal record, as Yun explores identity, her “personal experiences dealing with discrimination,” and “feeling(s) of exclusion.”
