No Swoon - "Take Your Time"
No Swoon, like many artists, has weathered the storm of the last few years. They’ve come out on the other side of unprecedented circumstances stronger and no worse for wear, with an impressive ten-song sophomore LP, Take Your Time, in tow. The album dropped last week via The Nothing Song and serves as a thematic and sonic counterpoint to their 2019 self-titled debut, an album that was steeped in supercharged guitars and guided by an outward gazing eye.
Tasha Abbot and Zack Nestel-Patt, the two songwriters that make up No Swoon, explore a whole other side of the dream-pop genre on Take Your Time and in the process, exhibit their versatility. They’re more introspective lyrically and to match that sort of deep inward searching, their compositions feel calmer. The title track, which kicks off the record, nicely represents this through softer synth textures and a more reflective word choice, as Abbot sings: “Maybe it was right to make the call. There was reason. Though there was time before this fogged up mind. It was all us.” It’s almost as if it’s a reaction to the urgent, “Don’t Wake Up, Wake Up,” which opened their debut album in dramatic fashion.
