Project Diem - "Days"
The duo of Meghan Seeberg and Dominic Dellaquila, known collectively as Project Diem, first caught my attention years ago during an intimate performance at the Secret Loft in Chelsea. They were quite strong performing as a duo, but in the intervening years, they’ve expanded their live lineup with exemplary results. Their full band set on a frigid night at Arrogant Swine this past November was the definite highlight of the evening, and signaled more good things to come for the Brooklyn dream-pop act. They stayed active over the last two years, releasing their first full-length, Pluto, and a string of singles, including a sweetly dense and woozy love song called “City Hall.” Last week, the band shared their first new music since, another reflective, love-centric track called “Days.”
“Days” is dreamy and dazy, exploring the knottiness of trying to get closer to someone who only wants to keep you at arm’s length. On the song, the band nicely shifts from more scaled-back moments to fully-fleshed out, big-time synth lines in a manner that’s somewhat akin to “It’s Cold,” a track co-written with Bartees Strange from Pluto. Starting out with some light guitar, the synths proceed to expand and recede multiple times, allowing Seeberg’s breathy vocals and lovelorn lyricism to punctuate a song that’s anchored by weighty percussion.
