Katy Rea - "We Don't Believe"

Katy Rea - "We Don't Believe"

Katy Rea’s dynamic and propulsive voice continues to resonate on her debut full-length, The Urge That Saves You. It’s the defining characteristic of her work and she continues to wield it with precision across various scenarios. Whether in the context of a tender ballad like “Say Goodbye (One More Time)” or a cinematic epic like “We Come Back,” she exerts the proper control, or allows her voice to run free, in service of the song. Her vocals shine on each of the record’s nine songs, dancing around and in between everything from folk-y guitar fingerpicking to gorgeously dense arrangements.

“We Don’t Believe” is one of the record’s more roaring tracks, counterbalancing its sparser moments, and allowing Rea’s voice to exert its full power. The song is quite full sounding from the beginning, starting suddenly with a surge of guitar, bass, and drums before Rea imbues feelings of intimacy through storytelling. The lyrics feel character-driven and metaphorical, with allegorical illusions to purity, a fire motif, and a male-female dynamic that plays out in each verse and the choruses.
