Husbands - "Must Be A Cop"
I definitely listen to bands like Husbands when it’s seasonally appropriate. Songs like “She’s A Betty” and “Piggy” from their 2020 album After The Gold Rush Party are picture-perfect beach pop, the kind that’s made for soundtracking subway rides out to Far Rockaway or carpools down to the Jersey Shore. But, these kinds of tunes are also a godsend during the harsh New York City winter, which is why I’ve had their brand new record, Full-On Monet, on loop since it dropped on the 18th. I plucked “Must Be A Cop” from the tracklist for this week’s Song of the Week, as it bottles up those warm-weather vibes and has a really nostalgic late 2000s sonic aura that I can never get enough of.
The chiming and wiry twin-guitar interplay on “Must Be A Cop” is a big part of what makes this song so special. It plays a central role right from the start, as the cyclical and precise playing of guitarist Danny Davis precedes a dense surge of sound. Washed out synth textures and a generous amount of reverb on the vocals give Davis’ voice a Panda Bear-like quality to them. The echoing harmonies, which feature contributions from the fantastic Samantha Crain, definitely add some additional Merriweather Post Pavilion touches. I’m a sucker for my “indie sleaze” glory days, so this song is an absolute winner in my book.
