BRNDA - "Service Loser"
I played BRNDA’s 2018 EP Thanks For Playing so many times the summer following its release that I nearly fried my cassette deck. That’s not an exaggeration. The Washington D.C. trio really makes music that’s quite addicting. It’s an artful style of post-punk that has a personality that nicely represents their city’s storied musical history (Q and not U comes to mind for me), but also incorporates some other unique sonic elements that help to make their sound really ear worm-y. On their latest single, “Service Loser,” the band welds together their confident and angular brand of post-punk with the kind of beat that you’d hear on an ESG or Delta 5 tune. The low ends really make this track stand out, as the bassline is intricate and throbbing, with grooves that seep through their wild and offbeat lyrics. Though their words sound of French origin, a quick glance at their Bandcamp page confirms that they’re actually precisely strung together English words and phrases. It’s fun and freaky, and although it’s short, “Service Loser” is an impactful song that’ll leave a lasting impression.
