Vera Kahn - “Don’t Fall In Love With A D.J.”
Vera Kahn is no stranger to music-making around these parts. She played guitar in T Rextasy, one of the more unique sounding groups to emerge from New York City in the last half dozen years. After releasing two stellar records with that project, Kahn has now turned her focus to developing her own eclectic solo material. She shared her debut single, the appropriately titled “Howdy,” in April, and followed that up late last month with “Don’t Fall In Love With A D.J,” which is this week’s Look At My Records! Song of the Week.
“Don’t Fall In Love With A D.J.” is a sweetly reminiscent tale of love lost that showcases Kahn’s flair for some distinct musical accents. Opening with some charmingly rickety sounding percussion, Kahn quickly introduces twangy sounding guitars into the fold to nicely buttress her saccharine vocal melodies, which play a central, guiding role. The combination evokes a cool retro garage rock meets country vibe with Kahn’s dynamic voice softening the edge at times, but also upping the emotion just a tad when necessary.
